The purpose of this website is to provide the members of all Southern California Al-Anon Family Groups (AFG) meetings with information pertaining to the Al-Anon / Alateen program in the California South Area.

The ‘California South Area’ is incorporated as a California Nonprofit Public Benefit Corporation (December 1993) under the name “Southern California World Service AFG, Inc.” and is often often referred to as SoCal World Service or SCWS. Southern California World Service, Inc. is also recognized as exempt from Federal Income Tax (May 1975) per IRS section 501(c)(3). The current bylaws, as revised at the November 2017 Assembly, are available here.

Area Structure

The California South Area is divided into 29 geographical districts, as depicted in the Area map, encompassing approximately 1250 groups. California South Area World Service is comprised of the following service arms:

  • Area World Service Board
  • Area World Service Committee
  • Area World Service Assembly

The Area World Service Board serve a three year term, also known as a panel, and consists of the following elected officers and appointed coordinators (linked to job descriptions):

Customary Annual Activities
Service Meetings
  • Area Assemblies – 2 meetings per year, third Saturday in May & November
  • Area Committee – 2 meetings per year, third Saturday in February & August
  • Board Meetings – 4 meetings per year, a month prior to the Area Committee & Assembly meetings
  • Sharing of Service (SOS) – third Saturday in January
  • Southwest Regional Delegates Meeting (SWRDM) – second weekend in March, location rotating among the region’s areas
