| OPTION | PRO (Positives) | CON (Drawbacks) |
| #1.Leave the SCWS board as it is: which includes the elected officers (Delegate, Alternate Del., Chair, Treasurer, Minutes Secretary, Past Del.), all SCWS Coordinators and the 3 Action Committee Chairs (ACC), which currently totals 20 members. | Encourages more members to participate in service beyond the group level. Generates more input on topics of discussion. Gives lots of members the opportunity to develop leadership skills. | Difficult to get large group together (where and when). Larger groups generally are slower to make decisions. It is becoming increasingly more difficult to fill vacancies on our Board. Coordinators are not required to have previous SCWS service so it takes more time, training and support to help them understand their position and responsibilities. Supply of available volunteers is depleted by having this large number already serving on Board, leaving less for involvement in projects. |
| #2. Designate our SCWS Board to be the elected officers and the 3 Action Committee Chairs (ACC), this would be Delegate, Alternate Del., Chair, Treasurer., Minutes Secretary, Past Del, + 3 ACC and would total 9 members. | With fewer positions it may be easier to get qualified and willing members. Because elected officers must have already served as DRs, the majority of this board is ensured to have previous SCWS service experience. Others volunteers can chose to participate in smaller projects, as opposed to a three year commitment as a Board member. The reduction in expense for mileage and/or training with a smaller board. Sometimes smaller groups have better communication. | A smaller Board means we will have slightly less input in discussions (board mainly sets agenda for SCWS Committee meetings). ACC would be responsible for relaying information from Coordinators to the board and taking information back to Coordinators. There may be no financial saving if coordinator are sent to training events and if they meet separately with their ACC. If Action Committees are not voted in 2008 to become permanent part of SCWS, then Board will need to find an effective way to share information back and forth with Coordinators (without using ACC). |
| #3. Form a new Executive Committee (examples are the World Service Executive Committee and what some of us learned about when we visited the Northern CA Assembly) which would oversee our current board and probably be 5 members. | Guidance from former SCWS service leaders. Possibly better communication with a smaller Executive committee and faster response to issues and changes. Provides oversight with checks and balances of elected officers. Should be easier for this smaller board to meet together at the same time and place. Possible financial savings with smaller board and less reimbursement for board meeting mileage and for training (if not all elected officers and coordinators attend trainings as they currently do). | Can be hard to accept change. Current Board positions may find it difficult adjusting to someone new over them. Creates one more link in dissemination of information (chance for communication difficulties): from exec. committee to elected officers, to coordinators, to districts to GRs to group membership. Not as many different ideas to draw from with a smaller number on board. Would make Election Assembly a longer day (adding 5 more positions). May add costs with 5 additional mileage reimbursements for Assembly and Committee meetings. Would require change to SCWS Corporation Bylaws. |

| As a contingency: If at the May 2009 Assembly, the GRs vote not to continue the Action Committees (that is when the second of the 3-year trial periods ends), then our SCWS board could be any of the above options, but minus the Action Committee Chairs (ACC). Therefore, Option #1 could be 20 - 3 = 17, or option #2 could be 9 - 3 = 6 members. | ||
| Should SCWS Appoint or Elect Action Committee Chairs (ACC) in future? | Possible to appoint Action Committee Chairs (ACC) by choosing an officer or coordinator within each committee instead of having chair as an additional position. Or, if ACC appointed, allows more time to search for best qualified persons. But, maybe more candidates would be interested if they stood for election than if appointed. If elected, allows GRs can chose who they think they'd most enjoy working with. But, Election Assembly could be a significantly longer day if also electing 3 ACC. | |
